Brain Injuries in Brevard County
Mark Anthony Gager — a West Melbourne, Florida, Attorney
Because the brain is such a complex organ, brain injury litigation comprises a very specialized field of law. Individuals with brain injuries are usually changed forever, but without a significant understanding of how the brain works it may be impossible for an attorney to show the extent to which the injury hinders their day-to-day activities.

Brain injuries are classed within three different categories: mild, moderate and severe:
- Mild: An individual with a mild brain injury may look and seem fine on first glance. But behavioral changes affecting mood, temperament and aggression can make it difficult to socially interact. It can also dangerously impair that person's judgment.
- Moderate: Moderate brain injuries can cause memory deficits, behavior deficits (leading to bizarre or "unacceptable" social behavior) and possible motor function impairment including speech problems.
- Severe: Severely injured individuals experience drastically reduced intellectual functioning and may even be in a vegetative state. Individuals with severe brain injuries are generally unable to function productively or live independently.
Closed Head Injuries (CHI) and Closed Head Trauma
After suffering a serious head trauma, it may not be immediately apparent that the brain is injured — especially if the head isn't bleeding and if the skull is intact. Even though the skull is not damaged, however, the brain is still vulnerable: It essentially floats in fluid inside the skull, meaning it can bounce and knock against the walls of the skull.
In addition, the skull interior is not smooth like the exterior: there are ridges and structures shaped somewhat like stalactites. Although these structures usually serve to hold the brain in place, they can actually scrape or puncture the brain during severe head trauma and they cause many closed head injuries.
If you have suffered a brain injury or if a loved one has, make sure your attorney understands both the science and the law related to it. For a free initial consultation with the Law Offices of Mark Anthony Gager, P.A., contact the firm online or call 321-473-3275.
